First of all, there are many kinds of environmental pollution including light pollution, visual pollution, soil pollution, and noise pollution. However, the largest problem now affecting the world is water pollution. It is the contamination of water such as lakes, rivers, oceans, and groundwater.
Water pollution has many causes but in my opinion, there are two main reasons why water is polluted: point source pollutants and non-point source pollutants. Factories dump industrial waste directly into lakes and rivers without being treated. Farms using pesticides to kill insects and herbicides to kill weeds can also lead to water pollution. Sewage from households is another point source pollutants too. While pollutants from stormwater and the atmosphere result in non-point source pollutants.
Water pollution can have dramatic effects. In many poor nations, there are frequent outbreaks of cholera and other diseases because people drink contaminated water. Besides, polluted water can also cause the deaths of many aquatic animals that can not reproduce.
So what can be done to stop this pollution? Surprisingly, a person can help save the environment by doing simple things. First of all, we should persuade people to recycle which allows products to be used over and over again. Instead of using plastic bags, we can use environmentally-friendly products like reusable bags and cloth bags. If we recycle plastic bottles, cans, and paper, we will be able to minimize the quantity of the garbage that is rising day by day. Recycling can also help reduce the number of trees cut down to produce paper products. It takes very little effort. It isn’t difficult to place plastic and glass bottles, aluminum cans, and paper in a bin. Anyone can do it. The average person produces 4.3 pounds of waste every day, but we can reduce that amount by recycling and reusing. Secondly, we need to know how to use water most effectively. It can be done by taking short showers instead of baths, using the dishwasher or washing machine only when fully loaded, or simply turning the faucet off while brushing your teeth. Last but not least, the government should encourage people not to dump waste into the water environment and let them know how water pollution is to make them aware of not polluting the water. Besides, anyone littering in the water should be fined heavily.
In addition, the effects of water pollution are alarming. Everyone has the responsibility to protect our environment to create a clean world for our generations in the future.
