1. Cách dùng cấu trúc Likely để chỉ năng lực trong tiếng Anh
Likely được dùng trong 2 cấu trúc :
- Be likely + to Verb
- It’s likely that + mệnh đề
Hai cấu trúc này đều chỉ điều gì đó có năng lực xảy ra .
1.1. Be likely to
Cấu trúc: Be likely to + động từ nguyên mẫu có to.
Ví dụ : Are parents who have a lot of money likely to spoil their children ?
Be likely to thường được dùng để tạo ra sự so sánh với các từ như : as … as, more, ( the ) most, less và ( the ) least .
Ví dụ :
- Kevin is (the) least likely to want to get married of all his friends.
- I think men are more likely to spend a lot of money on food than women are.
- A: I liked Budapest as well.
- B: Yeah. I’m probably less likely to go back there than to Prague.
- Steve is as likely to get the job as Dora. They’re both very well qualified.
1.2. It’s likely that
Cấu trúc: It’s likely that + mệnh đề.
Động từ trong mệnh đề thường chia ở thì tương lai đơn để chỉ năng lực xảy ra của việc nào đó .
Ví dụ :
- It’s likely that sales will rise.
- It’s likely that more states will soon follow California’s lead.
Với nghĩa có vẻ như, có vẻ như như, cấu trúc It’s likely that + mệnh đề thường được dùng để viết lại câu có các cấu trúc tương tự, như : It seems that … = It appears that … = It looks as if … = It is likely that …
Ví dụ :
- It appears that they’ve sent us the wrong information. (Có vẻ như họ đã gửi nhầm thông tin cho chúng ta).
= It seems that they’ve sent us the wrong information .
= It is likely that they’ve sent us the wrong information .
= It looks as if they’ve sent us the wrong information .
- It seems that she was very depressed about failing the test. (Có vẻ như cô ấy rất buồn vì trượt kỳ thi).
= It appears that she was very depressed about failing the test .
= It is likely that she was very depressed about failing the test .
= It looks as if she was very depressed about failing the test .
- It is likely that she’s very surprised at his amazing performance. (Có vẻ như cô ấy rất ngạc nhiên trước màn biểu diễn tuyệt vời của anh ta)
= It seems that she’s very surprised at his amazing performance .
= It appears that she’s very surprised at his amazing performance.
= It looks as if she’s very surprised at his amazing performance .
- It looks as if it’s going to rain again. (Nhìn có vẻ như trời lại sắp mưa).
= It seems that it’s going to rain again .
= It appears that it’s going to rain again .
= It is likely that it’s going to rain again .
2. Những lưu ý khi dùng cấu trúc Likely
Thể phủ định của cấu trúc be likely to Verb và It’s likely that là thêm not vào trước likely hoặc dùng unlikely. Unlikely mang tính sang chảnh hơn so với not likely .
Ví dụ :
- The company is not likely to make a profit in the second half of the year.
- People are unlikely to listen to him now because they know he lied.
Có thể dùng trạng từ mức độ như very, quite, highly và extremely trước likely và unlikely để nhấn mạnh vấn đề nghĩa .
Ví dụ :
- The government is very likely to propose changes to the income tax system soon.
- I think it’s highly unlikely that she’ll get into university with the test scores she has.
It is likely to ( hoàn toàn có thể, có năng lực ) không tương đương về nghĩa so với It is easy to ( thuận tiện làm gì ) .
Ví dụ :
- It’s easy to forget to save your work on the computer.
- Not: It’s likely to forget …
- It’s easy to confuse mushrooms you can eat with poisonous ones.
- Not: It’s likely to confuse …
