On February 6th, a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria. The epicenter was located 32 km (20 mi) west-northwest of Gaziantep. The earthquake had a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (Extreme) and was followed by a Mw 7.7 earthquake at 13:24.
The quake killed more than 4,000 people and took down countless buildings. The death toll is expected to rise as rescuers work to find more victims.
