In 1620, about 150 European people, usually called Pilgrims today, moved to North America. Arriving at the beginning of a very hard winter, they could not find enough food to eat, so many of them died. However, Native Americans helped them to save food for the next winter. Therefore, they held a big celebration – “Thanksgiving” – to thank the Native Americans and worship God. Today Thanksgiving is nationally celebrated in the US on the fourth Thursday in November to remember these early days.
The most important part of the celebration is a traditional dinner. The meal includes turkey filled with stuffing, sweet potatoes, and cranberries. Many families have their own special way of cooking.
On Thanksgiving there are special TV programs and sports events. In New York there is the Macy’s Parade – a long line of people march through the streets with large balloons in the shape of imaginary characters. Thanksgiving is considered the beginning of the Christmas period, and the next day many people go out to shop for Christmas presents.
