The southwest of the bay borders Cat Ba island, the east is the sea, the other part borders the mainland with a 120 km long coastline with a total area of ​​1553 km². Ha Long Bay consists of 1969 large and small islands. There are two types of islands here: limestone islands and schist islands, concentrated in Bai Tu Long and Ha Long Bay. Here, we can participate in admiring a series of beautiful and famous caves. The natural heritage area recognized by UNESCO covers an area of ​​434 km² including 775 islands. The uniqueness of Ha Long Bay is the shape and characteristics of these small islands. The beautiful caves are also a big highlight of Ha Long. In the Sino-Vietnamese sense, “Long” is a dragon, “ha” means to land. The name Ha Long refers to this legend. Ha Long Bay is honored as a natural wonder of the world not only by its beauty but also by many other factors. For example, there are many famous archaeological sites here: Dong Mang, Soi Nhu, Thoi Gieng… It has proven that Ha Long is the cradle of human civilization in the Late Stone Age. On top of that, there is also a superlative biodiversity here. With the concentration of many species of flora and fauna typical for each type of ecosystem: mangrove ecosystem, coral reef ecosystem, tropical forest ecosystem… along with thousands of precious marine animals. rare only in Ha Long Bay. An equally important point of this Ha Long Bay is that it is associated with many historical anecdotes of the nation, with many illustrious victories against foreign invaders of heroic generals.
