There are many theories as to why the dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago, but the cause of the extinction has most often been traced to a meteor hitting the earth. It wasnt, however, the meteors direct impact that killed the dinosaurs. Instead, after the meteor crashed into the Gulf of Mexico, it caused dust to rise into the atmosphere. This dust blocked out the sun, preventing plants from being able to photosynthesize. With the death of these plants, the dinosaurs no longer had a supply of food.
