  1. The Vietnamese are a people who have struggled for their independence and the preservation of their culture in the face of outside pressures to dominate them. This struggle has given them a keen awareness of what it means to be Vietnamese, and exactly what they must do to keep their traditions alive. They are a friendly people, and once you’ve earned their trust, you’ll find that they’re eager to share with you the secrets of their beautiful language and fascinating culture. If there is one quality that makes the Vietnamese unique, it’s this: they see themselves foremost as members of a community, rather than as individuals. It’s not that they don’t believe in the concept of the individual, it’s just that they see each person as part of a larger group with which he or she shares responsibilities and obligations. In general, they tend to be very kind and generous with each other because they feel like they’re all on the same team, so to speak. This is reflected in almost everything from how they do business to how they greet one another. When you meet someone for the first time or even just run into them casually, they’ll almost always ask you about your family. And when you say goodbye, they’ll almost always say something nice like “Take care of yourself.” They are also diligent people who work hard to make enough money to support their families. In addition, they often strive to provide new opportunities for their children’s future so that they do not have to struggle as much as the previous generation did. Coming from an agricultural society in the past where people had to work the fields every day, our parents were very dedicated to making sure we would not have that lifestyle once we were grown up. They stressed how important it was for us to get a good education so we could get decent jobs in the future as well as become leaders of our community.
