2. Giải đáp : were reading 

   – Ta thấy có ”at present” -> câu trực tiếp chia thì ”Hiện tại tiếp diễn” : S + be(is,am,are) + ( not ) + V-ing 

   – Mà vì đây là câu tường thuật ( gián tiếp ) nên ta phải lùi thì : Thì hiện tại tiếp diễn -> Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn : S + was / were + ( not ) + V-ing 

   – Boys – danh từ số nhiều -> dùng be là ”were”

   – Câu tường thuật dạng câu hỏi Yes / No question : S + asked + O + If / whether + S + V ( lùi thì )
